Monday is Fruit and Veggie Day! a.k.a. Alkalizing Day

Last week I announced Fruit and Veggie Only Day and wondered who would join me. I can’t believe it. The only person who said “Yes” is my husband, the original “Mikey” and a devout carnivore. I love it!

This morning we started our day with his and her breakfast fruit smoothies.

His … 1 cup Protein Powder + 1 TSP “Greens” + Mango Juice + POMS Pomegranate Blueberry Juice + Fresh Strawberries and lots of ice.

Hers … 2 Dried Figs soaked in distilled water for one hour plus the water they soaked in + 1 cup frozen pineapple + 10 fresh strawberries + more distilled water and a little ice.

Lunch for him is a big bag of carrots and a sliced Red Delicious Apple. (It will take more time to work him into the vegetable juice side of this day.)

Lunch for me is a fresh batch of veggie juice -- Kale + Cucumbers + Parsley + Carrots + 1 TSP “Greens” + Beet Greens and a glass of distilled water. (See supplies below.)

Why juice fast?
1. Raw fruits and vegetables alkalize the body. The more alkaline we are the healthier we are, the better we feel and the younger we look – bottom line. (You can also feel free to munch, crunch & drink juices. All levels of participation are welcome!)

2. It is a day off of cooking meals and doing dishes! What will you do with all your free time?

3. Why juice fast on Mondays? You can start the week off feeling lighter and more energized AND if you went to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday you will be jam-crammed with fresh fruits and veggies crying out to be eaten at their peak!

Here’s what you need to join in later today. Your 24 hours can start anytime, or use this to be prepared for next week.

Juice Fasting Day Supplies: Gallon of Distilled Water + Whole Almonds + Magma Plus + Blender + (Juicer * see below)
Then the fruits & veggies: Dried figs, your favorite fruits in season (strawberries, peaches, grapes, cherries …) plus carrots, kale, a head of lettuce and other favorite greens (beet greens, spinach, collards, arugula, Belgian endive, butterhead lettuce, chicory, dandelion greens, mustard and turnip greens …)

* If you don’t have a juicer, check out Champion Juicers here: http://www.championjuicer.com/ If you can’t afford one simply pick up a fresh carton of carrot juice and a greens juice at your grocery store. (Check the store date stamp to be sure it is fresh.)

Well --- I am at the phase of the juice fast where my mind is wandering ... Been thinking about Costco Hotdogs and strawberry fields and shortcake ...

Wonder what my husband is thinking about?

This is all good. I will persevere!

And now - for the rest of the story!

I made it. We made it. Can't tell you how many conversations I had that involved food. One girlfriend out of nowhere was sooooo excited about launching a restaurant. Another called me while she was making strawberry jam!

I - we - held strong and I cannot tell you how fabulous I feel today. So good that I have continued my juice fast!

I do see sardines on crackers in my very new future ...

Please join me next week. If I can do this you can too!

I'll do it next Monday. I can't promise I'll keep it up but I'll try! I think I'd do fine with lunch and dinner but I get annoyed (putting it lightly) when I change my breakfast routine. I'm still working at finishing a glass of water before breakfast every morning. I have been doing quite often since you suggested it to me. I'm also slowly replacing my morning 2% milk with soy which is a very difficult and frustrating process. After next Monday, if I discover I absolutely can’t stand another breakfast change, would the juice fasting still be beneficial if I just started it after breakfast? I’d certainly be willing to do that each week!

Great question Shannah! I also appreciate your insight ... new habits will never get off the ground if they are unbearable from the start.

Begin your fast after breakfast AND if the most you can do for weeks is to simply fast from after breakfast you've done the day - you just did it your way!

Sounds like you are building one great habit at a time. Way to go!

I've been thinking about doing a juice fast for the benefits you mention (haven't tested in a while, but I fear I'm a touch acidic). Monday sounds like the best day of the week for it (make up for the wrongs of the weekend!). Now, it's just a matter of getting myself to do it.

Thanks for the nudge, Viveca.

I will be joining you Viveca next Monday with the juicing however my doctor just told me to stay away from all fruit and fruit juices UGG now that is a new one for me. So do you have any great vegetable juice recipes that taste good and I will love doing LOL.

I can commit to doing this one day a week, I used to do it for 5-7 days at a time but after 2 days I am craving REAL food again, so I am going to try the once a week and see how that works.

I'd like to join in. I'm the one who talked Viveca's ear off about my new deli/bakery while she was fasting. The least I can do is make up for my bad friendship behavior, LOL. And, I have tons of recipes I can share. I'll put something together over the weekend that you can share with your readers. Can't wait to get started. This will be so much fun!

Yeah! I can't wait to see what you put together - you are a class act babe. This Monday I'll tell you all about those deee-licious Wally Amos cookies I just ordered ... heh heh heh!

Just kidding. We will glide through this day together!
